Road reopens after sewer main break in Fort Lauderdale; water activity restrictions still in place

June 25,2016

Restrictions on water-related activities remain in place for a number of waterways in Fort Lauderdale, but city officials Friday said that Bayview Drive at Sunrise Boulevard has reopened.

Crews have isolated the sewer main break at 1101 Bayview Drive in George English Park and will be making repairs Friday, city officials said.

The sewer main break that prompted the precautionary advisory for water-related activities happened on Thursday afternoon.

A portion of Bayview Drive was initially closed while crews worked to repair the 42-inch pipe that had burst, sending sewage water overflowing onto the street.

Most of the flooding was gone by early Friday, but workers remained in the area in order to hose down the ground and conduct other cleanups.

The George English Lake will remain closed until futher notice.

The incident doesn't appear to be related to ongoing construction projects in the area, said city spokesman Chaz Adams.

Motorists traveling on Sunrise Boulevard are restricted from going north on Bayview Drive; motorists heading south on Bayview Drive are being detoured east on Northeast 11th Street.

City officials advise drivers to expect delays in the area and seek alternate routes.

The city, in consultation with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, issued an advisory to avoid swimming, fishing, jet skiing and other activities in bodies of water within these boundaries:

North: Northwest/Northeast 38th Street.

South: Interstate 595 and Port Everglades.

West: Interstate 95.

East: Intracoastal Waterway.

Additionally, the Himmarshee Canal is closed to all vessels and public boat launches operated by the city are closed until further notice.

The advisory does not affect residents' drinking water, only the recreational use of the city's waterways.

The precautionary advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
